This month, we caught up with neo-soul artist Amy D. on her pre-show practices, working with community-minded people, and the process of creating her new album ‘Like You,’ out later this year on Unspeakable Records.
Illuminating the track Popdust described as “dream-pop gauziness and 70’s folk motifs,” the visual companion harnesses the raw emotion of the single as Rothman guides us into the depths of her psyche. Directed by duo Sleepy Puppies, “strange” centers around a lush, ethereal world where Rothman takes center stage. Creating a dreamy atmosphere through the use of intimate close ups and hazy lighting, “strange” presents Rothman frank and emotive as she brings life to her heart wrenching lyrics.
“This song was written, recorded, and produced in a little less than 24 hours in my tiny apartment in Valencia, Spain. Over the past two years, I downsized a lot of my physical belongings, and have been making music from a backpack-sized recording setup while traveling around the US, Canada, Europe, and North Africa. I wanted to challenge myself to make as much music as possible using as few resources as I could, trading a comfortable studio setup for freedom of location.”
Produced by Kate Ellwanger (aka DOT) and co-written with Cape Francis, “fifteen / feet” is a song described as “as foreboding as it is wondrous” by Atwood Magazine. The three-minute composition is a lush soundscape of organic instrumentation, driven by guitar and drums, that acts as an ideal foundation to showcase Rothman’s soft vocals and poetic songwriting.
“Nora Rothman is setting what should be a precedent for every musician.
The singer-songwriter has long been blending her musical output with activist work, and she practices the feminist ethos that she preaches. Today, she released a new single called "strange"—an ethereal, buoyant new track that meshes her honeyed vocals and bittersweet lyrics with expert production from Kate Ellwanger (aka Dot).”
“Like the title suggests, L.A. producer/polymath Dot‘s “Long Distance” covers a lot of ground. It’s something of an exercise in practical possibilites, she says, and here she deploys her considerable experience as a producer to demonstrate exactly how to turn a little into a lot.”
“The sound is completely new, but the songwriting is still grounded in my hopelessly singer-songwriter-who-idolizes-Joni-Mitchell style. Basically, I'm handing my songs their first pair of heels and driving them to the bat mitzvah party.”
